Blackwater is a private military company founded in 1997 by Erik Prince in North Carolina, USA. They are the largest of the three private security contractors, deals with the US government making up about 90% of the companies business which is reported to be in excess of $1 billion

Many employees, particularly higher ranking ones, are former Navy SEAL, CIA and FBI agents and other sorts of mercenaries. The main training facility of Blackwater is a large 7,000 acre lot in North Carolina, claiming to be the largest in the country, where they regularly train military and police officers. They also have a training facility in Chicago (BW North) which opened in 2007. Another training facility near San Francisco has been reported to be operational in the near future.
Because Blackwater is a private company, they are not held accountable under rules of warfare, even though most of their finances come from a government. They have actually been performing security mission in Iraq since 2003, and have since been routinely the subject of complaints from Iraqi officials of random civilian shootings, selling weapons and general lawlessness.
Blackwater mercs have also been deployed in American cities recently. It was widely reported that Blackwater had presence in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to "stop looters".
They have also been deployed in California to perform armed raids on state-run medical marijuana projects in association with the DEA, as report by the Los Angeles Times, August 2, 2008.
Could a company like Blackwater be given contracts to round people up in the case of an emergency or major disease outbreak? It has been said private companies are the way tomorrow's wars will be fought. It all depends who the next war is against...
